Even the previous two DMJ movies he was responsible for were conventionally edited... and I think this worked in their favor (though DMJ 4 is by no means a great movie...)
What is missing from this movie is purpose. It may as well have been a loop carrier featuring Juli Ashton. Previous installments of the series had a story to tell, had something more to offer than sex.
Pachard's DMJ2 offered so much story you almost saw the sex as secondary. There was purpose and a romantic longing to Scratch, due in no small part to Jack Wrangler's superior talents. In DMJ 3 and 4, we get Lois Ayers trying to escape from Hell, were she feels she doesn't belong. She gets killed in a freak sex accident (PT nails her too hard in the doggie position and she cracks her head open) and sent to hell. The movies deal with her getting out...
Drama is conflict. Part 2 had the Devil trying to get Justine. Parts 3 and 4 had Justine trying to escape hell. Part 5 had... well, not much. But it did have a lot of cuts.
The film was unsatisfying to me as an entry into the DMJ franchise. Technically, everything was of superior quality. Sound, lighting, picture quality... even Rip Hymen learned his lines and delivered them with a bit of skill not usually seen from him.
Dark seems to have lost his sense of humor and has gone towards this dark, death metal kinda thing. Gone are the perversely hummable themes of Johnny Jump-Up. In their place, the drone of the Ninn boys' crunch guitars... and this has been the case since Walter left the band...
The Roman/Greek orgy scene was the highlight for me. It showed everyone going at it full force and no one was standing around. A clear case where editing helped move a scene along and covered up any sort of transition between positions...
I would recommend this as a rental, but certainly don't buy it.
