When I was younger, much younger, and video stores didn't carry porno tapes, at least the ones in my town, and the mail order ones advertised in Hustler cost about $79.95 each, I thought I'd never be able to satiate my desire to see people having sex.
Well, almost two decades later, I would estimate I've seen over 1,000 porno tapes and if I was to stop and think, I probably wouldn't be able to recall anything special about more than 5 percent of them. But I have come to know what I like: big butts, anal sex, facials, fake tits (I'm sorry, but flat chested women don't do it for me and if nature hasn't done the job, then I don't mind if man helps out), blondes and anything with the words "Directed by John Leslie" on it.
I've followed recent posts to this newsgroup about what is a real director and what isn't, but that's for other people. To me, a director is someone who puts an indelible stamp on a video and John Leslie does that. If a Leslie video was to suddenly pop up on the screen during Seinfeld, I'd know who filmed it. Can't say the same for Justin Sterling or Phil M. Noir.
Leslie, in my ever so humble opinion, has reached a new level since he joined the Evil Angel stable of smut auteurs. His work with VCA had it's moments, the two Chameleon tapes come to mind, but with Evil Angel he has dropped any pretense of storyline and simply developed a style that is awash in music video leanings.
That can be both a bad and good thing. I think it's a good thing because there's no one in the world of porn who can actually act on a Hollywood level nowadays. Back in the "good old days" Jim Holliday said porn fans were going to have to simply accept the fact that adult movie acting would never go much above the high school play level of ability. That was true then and it's even worse now. Watching todays generation attempt to act reminds me of a fourth grade play where a nine year old in a carrot costume stumbles to the edge of the stage and haltingly says, "I'm a vegetable. My role in life is to. . ."
Seeing how awful the acting of this generation is and how seamlessly Leslie's videos play, his editing is superb, makes me wonder why more people don't copy Leslie's style. Could it be they don't care?
Nurse Tails, if I'm remembering correctly, was the last tape Leslie made for VCA before bolting for the greener pastures of Evil Angel. It's not a very good video but you can see the director Leslie was aching to be. There are scenes shot in total darkness (but it still works, oddly enough) and there is that weird, disjointed sounding jazz soundtrack that have become staples of Leslie's Evil Angel work.
Being that it was his last work for VCA, or one of his last, this tape has a thrown together feel. The sex scenes have a dull feel to them, a couple are ridiculously short, and most of the participants do not appear to really be into what they are doing.
The plot has Tiffany Mynx playing a big time movie director who is looking to interview nurses for erotic stories to put in her next film. This is your basic I can't think of anything, so let's have people sit around and talk and use the sex scenes as flashbacks plot. It's usually the forte of "Where's my paycheck?" directors and I was surprised to see Leslie use it. It really drives home the idea that Leslie was just phoning it in until his VCA contract ran out and he could go to Evil Angel.
After all the nurses arrive, all the females and Mark Davis, Mynx takes them into another room and interviews them one by one. First up is Angel Ash, maybe the best looking blonde to ever grace the porn screen, IMHO. Ash was only in the business a short while and while Leslie basically wastes her here, she did turn in a good performace in Anal Sluts and Sweethearts 2 and Stagliano showed off her awesome body to good effect in Face Dance Part 1.
Looking for really hot nurse stories to use in her next movie, Mynx listens as Ash relates a tale of how she and fellow nurse Cash provide home health care services for Joey Silvera. Actually, considering that home health care is for elderly people 99 percent of the time, there's probably an inside joke here between Leslie and the 20 year veteran Silvera.
Cash teases Silvera for awhile, sticking her good-sized ass in his face, as Ash sits off the the side, getting hotter and hotter. That's what we're supposed to think anyway. Ash eventually joins them, sucking on Silvera's been there done that cock, occassionally sticking the second best ass ever in porn (the best belonged to the late, great Krysti Lynn) in the camera. Silvera fucks Ash reverse cowgirl for awhile, then puts her on her side and sticks it up her ass. Seeing Ash get buttfucked is a treat, but Leslie never has them change position and Silvera's week cumshot on her blonde pussy hair ruins everything. A little bit of the doggie position for the anal and a facial would have made this scene a winner.
Oh, and Cash doesn't get fucked. She doesn't leave camera range but she just ends up behind Silvera, watching as Ash makes the appropriate faces for the anal.
Cash, speaking of her, is the next nurse to be interviewed by Mynx and she starts off by saying how turned on she is by boxing and the thought of two guys beating the crap out of each other. But when the scene begins it's Mynx dragging TT Boy into a dark tunnel and giving him the kind of blow job most of us only dream about.
This scene was very indicitive of what was to come for Leslie. The only lighting is some kind of spotlight way off in the background and there is the continual sound of the crowd as some fight rages on in another part of the building. Yes, Leslie did this kind of thing here and there in his VCA work, but he's taken it to another level on his Evil Angel tapes.
Mynx sucks on Boy for way too long, then they take turns pushing each other against the wall before Mynx throws her leg over his shoulder and they start to fuck. It isn't long before Jon Dough stalks down the hall and begins to fuck Mynx while she once again blows Boy.
They stay in this position until Boy drops his usual lame cum shot on Mynx's chin and Dough, following his standard pattern, gets off a decent cum shot, but misses with most of it.
This scene is basically nothing but shadows, which works against everything porn stands for (the idea of seeing sex, that is), yet it still works, the only scene in the tape that really does. Maybe it's Leslie's lack of fear of trying something different that makes it stand out. Or maybe it just looked good compared to the other scenes on the tape.
The third scene has Sasha Strange relating how she once was fucked by her boyfriend (Tom Byron) on a staircase while his friends looked on. This scene is short and totally pointless. Strange looks good, but Byron, well, if it wasn't for his hand grenade resembling balls, as Gene Ross once described them, I wouldn't have known it was him. His hair is completely jet black, cut in a way I'd never seen and he looks like he weighs 70 pounds. I don't even want to know what was going on in his life at this point.
Next up is Brittany O'Connell who attempts to convince businessman Randy Spears he needs to begin administrating himself a daily enema. Spears doesn't buy this, naturally, so O'Connell demonstrates on herself how easy it is. No, streams of water don't shoot out of her butthole, thankfully, that's one fetish I don't understand, she just demonstrates how easily the nozzle slips in, and then receives a standard fuck from Spears, which concludes with his coming her on her sparse bush.
We are then treated to a pointless lesbian orgy which involves the female cast, minus Mynx and Ash. After I fast forwarded my way through this, the final scene involved a ridiculously young Mark Davis telling Mynx that he's proud of his job emptying bed pans. It's apparently a family tradition he's happy to carry on.
Turns out Davis doesn't have a story to tell, but he's such a big fan of Mynx, that he just wanted to meet her. This flatters Mynx who proceeds to suck his weird looking, uncut dick, before letting him into her pussy and ass. Don't get excited. The anal is brief, without a penetration shot.
This isn't Leslie at his best and I can't shake the feeling he made the movie simply to fill out a contract. Unless you're a Leslie completist, like myself, skip this one.
Fresh Meat #4, on the other hand, is a different story. When Leslie first joined Evil Angel he released Dog Walker, an attempt at a movie with a story line. He then release the first Voyeur tape and then Fresh Meat, each of which made actual attempts, however bizarre, at telling stories.
No more. The truth of the matter is the only thing different about Leslie's movies now is the names. He has three basic series going at the moment. Voyeur, Dirty Tricks and Fresh Meat. There are no story line attempts to set them apart and the style is the same.
But what style.
Fresh Meat #4, like everything else Leslie puts out, is a collection of unrelated scenes that stand on their own as mini movies. We open with Harley D. strolling across a roof top as Jake Steed and another guy watch her. The sky is a beautiful blue and the camera work is jerky as the guys grab Harley and treat her roughly.
We suddenly find ourselves in what looks to be a warehouse and the guys proceed to pretty much fuck the shit out of Harley, including Steed's oversized member going up her ass. No matter how you feel about anal sex, you have to admire any woman who can take a cock that's bigger than anything that'll ever come out of her butt without nary a flinch. (Sorry for that image, but I strive to be honest! :-)
After the degradation of Harley is complete, we find ourselves in a field where Delfin and Randy Storm give up their goodies to a young guy I didn't recognize and some real old fart that may be Dave Cummins, but I'm not sure.
This scene is classic Leslie. There's no dialogue, which is always for the best in a porn movie, and it's never really explained what's going on. Are these a bunch of horny farm hands? Is the old guy a father and the young people his brood, lending this scene an incestual theme? Or is it just a bunch of sex crazed people who have somehow met up in this field?
Whatever the case, the old guy whacks off and Storm keeps a certain distance as Delfin and the young guy get the sex rolling. The old guy eventually starts balling Storm and Delfin and the young guy eventually get a pretty decent anal going. Delfin ends with a good facial, but Storm is left out in the cold as the old guy never does come. Not surprising since he fights to keep a hard-on throughout the scene.
We're then transported (that's a good word to use when describing a Leslie video) to a posh looking house where Silvia Saint, billed as the sexiest girl Leslie's ever come across, pushes a gigantic dildo in and out of her snatch until someone knocks on the door.
That someone is Jake Steed, once again, who gets Saint all to himself, banging her good, before Vince Voyeur makes his way into the scene. The boys end up DPing Saint and while it seems like every woman in porn now takes it up the butt, seeing someone as pretty as Saint get butt boned is a treat, even if it's Voyeur and not the horse dicked Steed doing the honors.
After your standard issue facial, we move to a sight not for the faint of heart. Shanna McCullough, who must be pushing 35 now, if not 40, struts around what looks like a doctors office, wearing tight leather and displaying what has to be the biggest ass I've ever seen. It must be the leather as McCullough, when she strips down, doesn't have any fat on her and her butt suddenly doesn't look that big. Still, if this is what leather does for a woman's ass, let's make it mandatory they all have to wear it. It'd make my days go by a lot easier.
After some playing around with Sean Michaels, Shanna straps on a large dildo and proceeds to butt bang Sana Fey into next week. There is some dialogue, Byron's been around long enough to handle it without looking stupid, but there isn't much else to recommend about the scene. Byron balls in her several positions, no anal, then shoots his load on her. It's a disappointingly mundane scene from Leslie.
We wrap up with Jamie Le and Sunny balling Marc Wallice and some other guy. Sunny is kind of iffy when it comes to looks. Her hair is cropped real close and her face is kind of hard looking. Still she takes a pretty good butt pounding, which is always good for something.
Jamie Le appears to be rather good looking, though it's hard to tell as she never takes her sunglasses off. The eyes are an important part of how anyone looks. I do, though like to see cum shot on the face of a woman wearing glasses and Leslie doesn't cheat us of that pleasure here.
These two tapes are a good example of what John Leslie was and what he has become. In my opinion, and I realize that's all it is, I think Leslie is the best director porn has at the moment. I love porn and I'm one of those informed patrons the so called porn establishment is reportedly so scared of. That's why I appreciate Leslie and the fact that he really tries. Some people have called Leslie's vision anti-people and anti-sex. I agree to an extent. But there's an art to Leslie's vision and that's something all the other directors do not have.

PS: I once told myself that since I enjoy reading others reviews, I would post reviews of all the movies I watch in order to give something back. Well, that's proven impossible, time just won't allow it, but here's a short list of some I've watched recently and what I thought.
Buttwoman 97: Had it's moments, but overall disappointing. Considering it's from Elegant Angel and is called Buttwoman, the fact that Tiffany Mynx's butthole doesn't get stretched, and isn't really even featured, is unforgivable.
Butt Banged Naughty Nurses: An embarrassement to the Butt Banged name. Anabolic show know better. And would Mark Davis please retire or stop hanging out with Christopher Alexander so much.
Seymore Butts-Musical Tushies: The first scene is 43 minutes long, with the last thirty-three featuring some of the most intense buttfucking I've ever seen (and by God, I've seen a lot). This scene was so awesome, I've forgotten what the rest of the tape was like. And I don't care that Ron Jeremy was in it. Seymore is a God.
Drop Sex: John Leslie is my man, but this weird assed tape, which appears to use up two plus hours to only reveal itself as some kind of porno version of the old Twilight Zone Occurence at Owl Creek Bridge episode, is too much, even for me.
